The Marsden Family History in Detail

Credits and Thanks

The information found below has been painstaking collated by my uncle Doug Kyle (husband of
Charlotte Marsden) and was presented to me at my wedding in the form of a Family History album. My sincere thanks go to Doug for this - without the album none of this would have been possible.
I hope that you will find the content as fascinating as I have and if you have anything at all to contribute, please e-mail history@marsdensonline.co.uk.

These pages have been updated during May 2002 to include a number of new family members and details of other ancestors uncovered by Doug's work. Extra photos have also been added.

Thank you

Keith Marsden
(October 1999/May 2002)

William and Mary Marsden
The following details are largely unconfirmed as the Halifax Parish records are very difficult to read for this period. It may be that the events named as Halifax were, in fact, Lightcliffe which is listed in the subsidiary churches of Halifax.
William Marsden was born around 20 August 1775 in Halifax to
parents John and either Sara or Hannah (see below). He married Mary (ne้ Rothera, who was born in October 1791 in Halifax, her date of death is unknown) on 26 December 1810. No entries exist for Rothera although Rathera may be an alternate name. This reveals Isaac Rathera of Halifax who was the father of William Rathera in 1803. Could this be a brother of Mary or possiby her father?

They had six children - John, Charles, Ann, William, Thomas and Joseph (as detailed above).

There are no known details of any siblings.

John Marsden
John Marsden was either the son of Joseph Marsden and was christened on 3 June 1753, or the son of John Marsden and was christened on 23 September 1753. Both were christened in the Halifax Parish register. The latter is listed under Halifax, of Lightcliffe and the assumption has been made that this is correct. His parents are therefore believed to be John and Betty. He married either Sara Barrett on 25 December 1772 or Hannah Shaw on 19 September 1773.

He had a son William (as detailed above).

There are no known details of any siblings.

John and Betty Marsden
John Marsden was born circa 1716 at Halifax of Lightcliffe. Date of death is unknown. He had his birth registered by a relative, William Marsden, in Halifax of Lightcliffe. This is probably not therefore his father, but the most senior or knowledgable member of the family. There are no obvious details of a William Marsden from that date, although there is one who might fit in, although this is in Darfield which is in the South Yorkshire area.
He married Betty (ne้ Morton, whose dates of birth and death are unknown) in Halifax on 1 October 1750.

They had a son John (as detailed above)

Previous Family History
The only marriage that could be found previous to John and Betty is another John Marsden to Esther Preston in about 1712 at Halifax of Lightcliffe.

Prior to that there are no references to the Marsden family in that location or in any immediately obvious locations.

John Marsden:
There is a Sara Barrett registered as marrying a John Marsden in about 1747 in Halifax. This raises a lot of question, but no answers at present. There are several similar entries and the assumption has been made that and actual date is likely to be the correct answer...
